PECAN, Inc. is a statewide referral system, designed to enable children
interested in any type of art form to enlist the help and support of this
organization to pursue activities and instruction that relate to their
interest.
It is an umbrella organization having a conduit to bring together
various organizaions in Pennsylvania that play a role in the development
and encouragement of the arts for young people. Organizations and
instructors that offer the arts to children will be represented for free
as well as the information can be accessed free of charge.
Our Mission Statement:
"To aid and support the development of young people into
magnificent human beings through participation in the arts."
Our goals:
- To encourage positive development of youth through education in the
arts.
- To aid the public in accessing the broad range of resources in
the arts available for children including those children at risk or
with disabilities.
- To recognize, commend and promote those individuals and
organizations who are bringing the arts to young people.
- To support the development of young people into magnificent human
beings through participation in the performing arts.
Why create PECAN, Inc.?
- To help bring an awareness of what is already being offered for
children in the arts in all areas of Pa.
- To bring it all into one "nutshell", to catalog it, to
advertise youth development through the arts, to make it easier for
the public to take advantage of what is being offered to youth in the
arts in the areas of
Pa.
- If someone is to move away to another place in Pa. or move into an
area, this would help them locate an art organization or an instructor
with whom they can continue their chosen activity or become part of in
their area without the struggle of trying to find information thus
wasting precious time in the child's development.
- To open up areas to youth who are not being exposed to the arts by
promoting demonstrations and/or participation in different types of
art in the school setting or camps or workshops.
- To help bring more youth into arts activities, including those with
disabilities and those at risk, and to help spark talents that would
otherwise be lost without nurturing of information and
participation.
- To coordinate the information of all the activities, groups,
instructors in every art conceivable that exists for youth in the
areas for quick and easy access by anyone.
- To commend the areas (Harrisburg, Pitt., Phili., etc.) for what they
have to offer youth in the arts.
Why Art for Youth?
Music and art for all youth are documented to be meaningful, purposeful,
and productive activities that
can make or change a child's life forever. It can develop rhythm and
structure in the life of a child, therefore helping the child gain
self-confidence and self-worth. The participation of at risk kids in
the arts offsets the attraction that would otherwise be met by
alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs and therefore minimizes or obligates the
desire of resorting to the latter.
